Junior Open Golf Week
North Wilts Golf Club’s first ever Junior Golf Week was judged a resounding success by all concerned, particularly the 100 plus youngsters who took part.
For many it was their first experience of the sport, but many enjoyed it so much that they have already bought some clubs and plan to take up the game!
The pro shop team of Graham Laing and Wes Marsh gave away free equipment and every child who attended went away with a free golf club to practise at home with. They also gave free lessons with over 600 attending the group sessions and over 500 individual lessons, all in six days. Although tired, they were clearly pleased with the results, as Graham Laing pointed out “The coaching went really well, everyone seemed to improve over the week and we have potentially found some really good prospects for the future”.
On the final day, there was an afternoon of fun competitions followed by a free burger, drink and prize giving. The club awarded free junior membership to the most promising boy and girl, as well as to the winner of a draw from all the youngsters who took part in the week. Wes Marsh in announcing the winners praised the overall level of the performance of all those who took part, which made choosing the winners very difficult.
The award for the most promising boy went to Jack Fordham and the girl to Lorna Brown, and the lucky winner of the draw was Danny Vallis (they are pictured below with Paul Baker, Junior Organiser).

Paul Baker the junior organiser was delighted with the week, “We wanted to show that golf can be fun, not expensive and that North Wilts is a friendly, safe place for children to play sport. I think we did that this week. The juniors all seemed to enjoy the week, and it was great to see so many children at the club, all with huge smiles on their faces”. He also thanked the club for its support and the many helpers who made the whole week possible.
